The long and short of it...

Home most of the day, working.

Had a terrible night’s sleep after the big winds blew up. Sounded a lot like last year’s blow when all the trees fell. Even so, got in some decent time at the keyboard.

Reviewed two of the new N stories and read a third. Then went out and pruned back the flowers in anticipation of the first freeze. Insulated the new fruit tree with straw we picked up from Good Earth. Hope it does it’s job.

Caught a little football this afternoon, then went for a walk around the hood. Big breezes still coming off the mountains. First time I’ve worn gloves in a year.

Doc appointment tomorrow.

Good start to the weekend...

Early to the keyboard this morning. Got in some good work. Been fooling around with a long piece, and seem to be making progress with it. Surprised? Man, I’m always surprised anymore.

PT this afternoon. Found time for a decent workout afterward. Napped for half an hour when I got home, then went out for a stroll around the hood. Trees are still pretty, but the wind’s done its bit to shake the leaves from them. High blue skies today, and plenty of sun. Not sure what the temp was, but it had to be mid-seventies.

N stories coming in again. Looking forward to reading someone else’s work for a change.

Nothing much going on this evening. Gonna sit back and take it easy. Start fresh in the morning.

Putting this one to rest...

Not sure where this one went, but it went fast and its all but gone.

Up early to work on the boy’s X-mas book, and take a deeper dive into the long piece. Did okay with the revisions, then headed off to the gym, and back home for a nice long walk.

I keep saying it, but the weather’s picture perfect. So far, it’s been a beautiful fall.

Was up late last night. Figure to hit the rack early this evening, and shoot for an equally early start tomorrow.

In the books...

Pretty day. Cool, but sunny with blue skies.

Wrote early, hit the gym, then spent the afternoon with Greg, working out the details on the boy’s Christmas book.

Took a long walk around the hood when we got home.

Still capable of being surprised...

Could swear a post or two fell through the cracks. Dunno. But here it is, Monday again, the weekend over.

Anyway, woke early from a good night’s sleep, and went to work on the long piece. Put in the final edits for the boys’ Christmas book, too. Meeting with GB tomorrow to talk about the layout, print times, etc.

Gym was quiet today, which was nice. Managed a nice workout without a lot of interruptions. Got in a walk, too, after I got home. Weather’s still holding strong.

Heard Stuart O’Nan’s got a new book out. Need to latch on to it. C McCarthy’s The Passenger is also due out in another week or two. Looking forward to each.

Not much going on the world of short fiction. Have a handful of pieces out in the mail, more than a few of them for six months or longer. With school back in session maybe we’ll see some progress.

Potato leek soup tonight.

Early bedtime.

Best new of the day? I’m now, officially and forever, a great-great uncle.

Pleasantries...

I don’t know how long these magnificent fall days will keep coming, but I’m gonna enjoy each one while it lasts…and probably long afterward.

Got in some good writing this morning. Good workout, too. Did some grocery shopping later in the afternoon, and took a long walk around the neighborhood, too.

Read a couple of fine stories in the interim. One of them Narrative’s Spring prize winner.

Need to start working on submissions tomorrow.

Tonight, wine and cheese.

The rest is yet to come...

The good weather abides. Sunny today. Blue skies and a nice warm breeze.

Put in a solid morning at the keyboard, then went off to the gym. Worked out, suffered through PT, then came home and went for a long walk around the neighborhood. Crickets have begun chirping earlier than usual.

All in all, a nice day.

Gonna settle in an watch a bit of news tonight.

Reprise edition...

Good weather’s holding tight.

Woke to a sunny morning, and followed it all the way to the end.

Wrote a while, made an early trip to the gym, then came home and put in a little more time at the keyboard. Managed a walk around the neighborhood, too.

Not sure what tomorrow’s gonna bring, but hope it’s more of the same.

Killing time. Again...

Another one, just like the other one.

Finished a rough draft of a new short. Feels like it has promise.

Got tired of coming home late from the gym, so worked out earlier than usual. Went for a short walk when I got back, and got a call from the boys on the way home. They’re already gearing up for Halloween.

Looking forward to seeing them.

No big plans for the evening. Figure to settle in, read, then go to bed. Can’t believe tomorrow’s Wednesday.

The easy way...

Quiet day.

No tragedies.

Wrote, went to the gym, ran a few errands, and kept a low profile.

Got a chance to catch up with my buddy S. Had a nice long talk. Looks like it’s my week to catch up with friends.

Looking to the future...

Quiet, pretty day. Sun. Blue skies. Everything you want in a Sunday.

Woke late—as late as I can recall—but still managed to put in some strong work at the keyboard. Abandoned the long piece for the moment, in favor of something a little more manageable. Found the beginnings of a story I’d started a while back and decided to finish at least a rough draft this week.

Holiday tomorrow. Or used to be, anyway. Not sure what that’s gonna mean for business, but have a feeling it won’t make a difference either way.

Got in a nice chat with my sis this afternoon. Her new digs out in the country are coming along. Casita’s been framed and should be ready for move-in come November. Pretty cool place.

Need to catch up with Greg tomorrow, and see about the layout/printing for the boys’ book. Gonna be Christmas before we know it. Need to make sure we stay on track.

From one show to the next...

Haven’t post in a few days. Too tired, I guess.

Went to the art show of an old friend yesterday evening. Nice turnout in a new gallery downtown. Saw a lot of cool pieces, and was happy I’d gotten mine years ago before his prices started reaching into five figures. Had a glass of wine afterward at Rico’s, and listened to some nice live jazz.

Kit’s come back a little, but only in that he doesn’t seem sick. He’s still looks old and tired and ready to say goodbye. He’s been fighting his pills again, though not as earnestly as before, but as long as he hangs in, and engages, I guess we’re okay.

Worked on a new short this morning after getting my billing out of the way. Felt good to get some quality time at the keyboard. Forwent the gym today, but did get in a nice walk around the neighborhood and enjoyed the cool fall weather. The sun’s sitting low in the sky these days and the temps have been running in the mid-seventies. Wish it could be like this year round.

Cooking trout tonight.

Looking forward to a quiet evening.

One more Wednesday...

A slight righting of the universe.

Peaceful day.

Fall’s come and the morning has an edge to it.

Sent off some letters, cleaned the house, spent an hour or so at the gym trying to get through the malaise of the Covid/Flu shots, then came home and went for a short walk.

Deep longings.

Tired of guesswork...

Another day.

Have stopped trying to figure out what’s next. Working on the moment instead.

Wrote for a while this morning, then went to the gym to blow off steam. Took a nap with the boys when I came home.

Calendar’s filling up with appointments, projects, and the like. Good to have some distractions.

Rained a bit this afternoon. Not much, but enough to keep things growing.

Thinking about going fishing tomorrow. The Arkansas, maybe.

Darkness visible...

Another day in limbo.

But a nice one.

Kit was very affectionate today. Good about his meds, and all the rest. Even wanted to be brushed. I wish I knew how to do this, but not sure what sort of human being I’d be if I did. Today wasn’t the day, and I’m happy for that. Still, I know it won’t be long from now.

My heart just keeps breaking.

Adding it all up...

Long day of soul-searching.

Numbers have rarely given me any comfort, but sometimes they’re all that makes sense. The answers I’m looking for, but don’t want to hear, are now just a matter of math.

Gonna try and get my head in the right place this weekend.

The long and short of it...

Rough day.

Took Kit to the vet early this morning. Had blood work done, urinalysis, etc. Turns out his panel is exceptional for a seventeen year old cat. Bad news is, his thyroid’s in a tough way and the meds aren’t doing much for it. He’s been aloof, hiding under the bed, which isn’t at all like him. Fear we may be heading into some tough territory in the next couple of weeks.
